In collaboration with NOVA University of Lisbon, the European Journalism Centre has launched a new programme to promote investigative journalism based on science.

The two-year programme (2025-2027) will offer funding opportunities, training, mentoring, and networking. There will be two calls for applications, the first expected for summer 2025.

Selected beneficiaries, including research and academic organisations and European newsrooms, will receive support from experts and mentors and gain access to an exclusive training programme and networking sessions.

The Journalism & Science Alliance is more than just a grant programme - it is an impact investment in building a self-sustaining model for investigative journalism through cross-sector collaboration. By connecting journalists with scientists, we are empowering local and independent media outlets to produce high-impact journalism that serves the public interest.

-Vera Penêda, Director Programmes & impact at EJC

The programme at a glance:

  • Over the next two years, the Journalism & Science Alliance will award approximately 75 grants to media organisations and research institutions working on investigative journalism projects, with the essential condition that media organisations and research institutions work together to secure funding.
  • Each supported project will receive financial aid for up to 8 months of in-depth investigative reporting on critical public interest topics.
  • The Journalism & Science Alliance focuses on partnerships between media outlets and research institutions to strengthen the credibility and impact of investigative reporting.
  • Investigations will cover essential topics such as climate change, healthcare, emerging technologies, and local governance.
  • The first call for projects will open in summer 2025, inviting applications from teams that include at least one media outlet and one research or academic institution.

The programme is delivered in partnership with ITQB NOVA - Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier, a scientific research and advanced training institute at NOVA University of Lisbon, with the support of the Creative Europe Programme (CREA).
