The biggest global survey about and for data journalists is now open

For the third year in a row, we are asking data journalists and professionals to share insights into their skills, tools, work practices, demographics, and needs. The State of Data Journalism Survey for 2023 is now open, and running until 16 January 2024.

The results of the survey and the collected, anonymous, data will be shared publicly in March 2024.

What is new this year?

Two new sections have been added to the survey, one on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the other on Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT), examining how both are used in journalists’ work and routine. We will also revisit some of our longer-standing questions. Does data journalism continue to be a predominantly male field? Are a third of data journalists still self-taught? In 2023, have more outlets created dedicated data units?

In 2022, more than 1,800 respondents answered our call, which was a substantial increase from the year before. With journalism constantly changing and evolving, more and more journalists are expanding their skill sets and entering the space of data journalism. Let’s see what 2023 brings!

Without the support of other organisations, the European Journalism Centre would not be able to serve the data journalism community.

You can read more about the key takeaways from 2022, our mission and methodology on our project page.
