EJC’s new AI partnership with The Newsroom

We are starting a partnership with The Newsroom, an AI startup based in Portugal, to provide early access to a new platform designed specifically for climate journalists: Climate Blocks.

This collaboration answers a real challenge voiced by many journalists in our network — the struggle to keep up with the flood of new climate science studies and connect them meaningfully to their reporting.

From August 2025, EJC grantees and members of our broader community will have access to this resource and explore how it might support their work.

What is Climate Blocks?

Climate Blocks is an AI-driven platform that helps journalists to:

  • Explore the landscape of climate research in a structured, searchable way
  • Identify key scientists, institutions, and policy-relevant findings
  • Understand how different studies connect — and where they diverge

Trace each insight directly back to its original research source

The platform is powered by a knowledge graph — a smart, AI-supported map of the climate research space. It doesn’t spit out headlines or quick answers. Instead, it’s designed to support deep reporting and give journalists the context and clarity they need to tell accurate, meaningful stories.

Imagine you're researching the impact of permafrost thaw. Climate Blocks could help you quickly identify the latest research on methane emissions, key researchers in the field, and how different studies on Arctic warming are connected. This would allow you to trace insights back to their original sources and build a more nuanced story.

Built by journalists and researchers working together and supported through the EU’s FF+ Digital Europe Programme, the platform is meant for use, testing, and improvement by working journalists — including you.

Who is this for? Is Climate Blocks for you?

If you’re reporting on climate or environmental issues and struggling to keep up with scientific developments, this platform is built with you in mind. The early access programme is open to:

  • Grantees supported by EJC on climate and science journalism projects
  • Members of our wider community, via a short registration process

We’ll also support The Newsroom with gathering feedback to make sure the platform is genuinely useful.
