The IJ4EU Freelancer Support Scheme provides funding to cross-border teams primarily composed of freelance journalists with tailored support and resources. The overall amount available in 2024/25 is approximately €500,000, and the scheme provides financial but also further support through mentoring and training.

This is a call aimed at freelance journalists working outside traditional newsroom settings. Eligible projects should focus on a topic of cross-border relevance, and must be conducted by teams with journalists based in at least two European countries that are part of the European Union's Creative Europe Programme; this includes all 27 EU member states as well as the following non-EU countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, and Ukraine.

Using any format of choice - print, broadcast, online, documentary filmmaking, or multi-platform storytelling - participants must aim to publish in at least two countries.

The deadline for applications is on 28 October at 23:59 CET.

The Freelancer Support Scheme is the second IJ4EU grant running in parallel with the Investigation Support Scheme. This scheme offers grants of up to €50,000 to investigative teams of any kind, including newsrooms, investigative not-for-profits, and freelancers. The scheme is managed by the International Press Institute (IPI) and will allocate €1.5 million in 2024-2025 to projects.

The IJ4EU programme is supported by the European Union’s Creative Europe Programme. The programme maintains complete independence from donors in the selection of projects and strictly guarantees the editorial independence of all grantees.
