Do you want to work with us to build resilience into journalism?

Since 1992, the European Journalism Centre has been building a sustainable, ethical and innovative future for journalism through grants, events, training and media development. We are an international non-profit, headquartered in the Netherlands, that connects journalists with new ideas, skills and people.

Our team of 25 people is diverse, multicultural, multilingual, and passionate about our mission.

Partners like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Google News Initiative, the European Commission, Free Press Unlimited, Open Societies Foundation, Democracy & Media Foundation and Adessium Foundation work with us because we are independent, well-connected and at the centre of European news innovation. Last year we estimate we reached over 100,000 journalists with our events, training and programmes.

To help our teams achieve their goals, we are looking for two Project Managers. Is one of these roles the right fit for you? Check the details below.

Project Manager Events

As a Project Manager, you will deliver crucial programmes for European journalists. Your job will be to lead on specific areas of the portfolio, namely large-scale events, as well as logistics, community engagement and project communications. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Helping to develop event programmes and training curricula
  • Building and executing project plans
  • Supporting the Team lead through progress reports and evaluation
  • Implementing logistics and operations
  • Implementing community strategies that build networks and encourage engagement amongst key audiences
  • Supporting speakers, participants and other beneficiaries
  • Coordinating the production of resources and content.

Requirements

Successful applicants are strong communicators and love to inspire and get things done. You thrive on working in a team with like-minded colleagues and you are a hands-on person. However, applicants need to be self-reliant and have demonstrable experience in managing projects. This is a tough but rewarding role, with tight deadlines, exciting travel, and challenging logistics.

You will have at least two years of experience working on professional event programmes in the communication or journalism space. You have a demonstrable passion for media innovation and quality journalism. Excellent English-language skills, both spoken and written, are a must.

  • Commitment: 1.0 FTE (full time) or 0.8 FTE (4 days a week)
  • Location: a strong preference for Maastricht. Brussels is an option
  • Travel: Extensive
  • Salary: Commensurate with experience
  • Start date: 1 April 2020 latest
  • Contract: One-year temporary contract, with an option to renew for the second year.

Project Manager Grants

As a Project Manager, you will join our current Grants team in delivering crucial programmes for European journalists and media organisations. Your job will be to lead on specific areas of the portfolio, namely grant-giving operations and skills training, as well as logistics, community engagement and project communications. The aim is to support journalists, media organisations and storytelling, especially on underreported topics. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing grant programmes
  • Building and executing outreach plans to raise awareness and to support journalists
  • Supervising project budgets
  • Implementing logistics and operations
  • Day-to-day project management
  • Supporting applicant grantees, speakers, facilitators and funders
  • Coordinating the production of resources and content.

Requirements

Successful applicants have at least two years of experience with grant-giving operations, preferably in the journalism or communications field. Knowledge of the European media landscape is a must. You have an interest in global development or are keen to learn more.

While you will work in a team, applicants need to be self-reliant and have demonstrable experience in managing projects. Excellent English-language skills, both spoken and written, are a must.

  • Commitment: 1.0 FTE (full time)
  • Location: Maastricht or Brussels
  • Travel: Moderate
  • Salary: Commensurate with experience.
  • Start date: 1 April 2020 latest.
  • Contract: One-year temporary contract, with an option to renew for the second year.

Further Information

We enjoy flexibility in our working hours. Our team is multicultural and we have an informal yet professional work environment. We value willingness to learn and we will offer you opportunities to learn and grow as a person and as a professional.
