We’ve built a new space for journalists to learn and improve their data skills

Beautiful things happen when journalism meets data: individual stories are connected with larger societal challenges; complexity gets translated into insightful visualisations; investigations join the dots between billions of documents.

At the European Journalism Centre, we believe the use of data in journalism is a cornerstone of building resilience in any newsroom.

After 10 years of running data journalism programmes, and following months of research, we are excited to bring you, supported by Google News Initiative. This is a new space for journalists to learn and improve data skills, explore the latest challenges in the field and discuss new approaches with their peers.

The story behind has been almost 10 years in the making.

Since 2010, when we launched our first data journalism programme “Data Driven Journalism”, the European Journalism Centre has been working to support data journalists. On the way, we learned a lot.

In 2011, we produced the first Data Journalism Handbook, a guide to the world of data journalism, and it quickly became a standard reference for early career data journalists worldwide.

When, following the success of our MOOC “Doing Journalism with Data” which was attended by 25,000 students, we launched our first courses in 2015, we quickly realised that there was a need for classes in all different levels — from basic introductions to advanced master classes.

Last year, while developing the second edition of the Data Journalism Handbook we felt that in the age of maturity for data journalism, the time has come to offer a critical assessment of the role of data in journalism and society.

Today, almost 10 years after our first initiative, we hope can become the go-to resource for data journalism enthusiasts over the world.
