30 young journalists start their careers across Europe

The upcoming weeks mark an exciting chapter for 30 young journalists across Europe: They have been selected to join this year’s cohort of the GNI Student Fellowship, a programme managed by the European Journalism Centre in partnership with the Google News Initiative. The Fellowship has been created for students and recent graduates across Europe who want to gain valuable work experience in the European media industry and build a professional network. This means that they will kick-start their careers by spending their summers working at newsrooms across 14 European countries.

It is an interesting time to be joining a European newsroom. With the pandemic easing down, many are returning to the office. This allows the Student Fellows to fully immerse themselves in the hustle and bustle of the newsroom experience, meet colleagues in person and make valuable connections.

The selected students and graduates will bring valuable skills and innovative ideas to the table. They have a wide variety of backgrounds ranging from data journalism to fact-checking, multimedia, audience engagement, and more. Newsrooms get the opportunity to open their doors to new voices and fresh perspectives.

Meet the Student Fellows

Kicking off the Fellowship

Like in previous years, we hosted a virtual kick-off bootcamp to help prepare the Student Fellows for their time at the newsrooms. During the three-day event, the soon-to-be media professionals got the opportunity to participate in relevant workshops on topics such as data visualisation and fact-checking, as well as mental health and diversity. They also got to know each other and asked all their questions to the EJC and experts in their field.

It was great to meet the Student Fellows during the bootcamp and we are looking forward to staying in touch with them during this exciting summer!

The GNI Student Fellowship 2022 is a programme managed by the European Journalism Centre in partnership with the Google News Initiative. It offers paid summer placements to journalism, technology, multimedia and design students as well as recent graduates across Europe who want to gain valuable work experience and build a professional network.
