When the dangers associated with doing the job comes from an external source, the journalist can try, to the extent of his or her ability, to remedy the situation. Although in many countries attempting to do so is highly dangerous, there are several examples in which the intimidation tactics, and the individual or organisations that conduct them, have been made public. There other cases when salvation has come from the protection of journalists and civil society uniting against the threat.
With self-censorship, the situation is much more complex.
