RIA Novosti Releases a Russian Translation of The Data Journalism Handbook

24 September 2012 | PRESS RELEASE

The Russian translation of The Data Journalism Handbook, which was produced and published by the Russian International News & Information Agency (RIA Novosti) with support from the European Journalism Centre, has now been released.

The Data Journalism Handbook is a free, open-source book that aims to help journalists to use data to improve reportage. It provides inspiring examples from news organisations across the world and a collection of tips and techniques from leading journalists, professors, software developers, and data analysts for how to get started with data journalism.

Jonathan Gray, lead editor for the handbook, says: “We are delighted to see the release of the Russian edition of The Data Journalism Handbook. Overall we’re very pleased that there has been such great interest in translating and localising the book by NGOs and media organisations around the world. So far over four hundred people have approached us regarding translations in over 40 languages – which is testimony to the demand there is for a resource like this, and to the value of the contributions we’ve had.”

The first English version of the book was made freely available online in April. It was subsequently published by O’Reilly Media in hardcopy and ebook format in July. The book is the result of an international, collaborative effort involving dozens of data journalism’s leading advocates and best practitioners - including from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the BBC, the Chicago Tribune, Deutsche Welle, the Guardian, the Financial Times, Helsingin Sanomat, La Nacion, the New York Times, ProPublica, the Washington Post, the Texas Tribune, Verdens Gang, Wales Online, Zeit Online and many others. The project is coordinated by the European Journalism Centre and the Open Knowledge Foundation.

Both the original English version and the Russian translation are freely available online under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, which means that they can be freely downloaded, shared and built upon. The Russian version of the Data Journalism Handbook can be found at the library section of RIA Novosti’s Corporate Training Centre. The English version can be found at datajournalismhandbook.org
